My name is Angie Hancock and I have 2 children in the
district. You’ve heard me speak in support of the Challenge program many times.
Tonight I will be reading statements of support from 2 students. The first
student is a recent graduate who feels his path to success started in the Self
Select Challenge Program. He says:
Thanks to my AP classes in high
school, I entered the UW with 79 credits, almost two full years ahead of my
peers who were denied the opportunity. Because of this, I have the chance to
fully explore my academic interests, saving both time and money. Without the
challenge program to prepare me for the demands of AP classes, I may not have
been able to seize this enormous opportunity. Being able to self-select for
greater challenges throughout my secondary education has prepared me for
college and allowed me to maximize my education. Eliminating challenge classes
and like programs would be a disservice to all students, ignoring the diversity
and range in skills, abilities and backgrounds of students. Our students are
not identical, so expecting a one size fits all program to succeed is foolish
and naïve.
Jimmy R., Woodinville High
School Class of 2015
Another current student wrote this letter:
Please hear the words of our district’s kids and please
choose the Middle School option that does not take away their choices. Thank
you.
